Hello, my name is Michael and I have been here in Fairbanks for approximately five years.I came to this great state by way of the United States Air Force.I planned to make the Air Force a career but while in I was serving, I sustained some injuries that forced me to leave the Air Force after my six year stint. These injuries left me disabled and caused me to reevaluate what I was going to do with the rest of my life. For years I had defined myself by what I could do physically but now I found myself needing to be redefined by more than my physicality. This major perspective change, or paradigm shift, in my life was one that put me on the path I am on today. In response to my perspective changing, I aimed myself at school and began college at UAF in the Fall of 2008. Last semester, I finished my first degree in Alaska Native Studies and I am waiting to start graduate school in Cross Cultural Studies in the fall.
Throughout my life I have worked with computers. Since the early 1990’s I have been building and working with mostly PC’s. Since I almost exclusively used PC’s, I did not use Adobe products for graphical or website design. It has only been recently that I have begun to look at the Adobe suite and want to learn how it works. I know throughout this class I will have times that are both enlightening and frustrating as I compare the software that I currently use versus the Adobe suite of software.
Hello, I live in Fairbanks and I take film/photo related classes whenever I can. I like video editing and abstract art/photography. I’m taking InDesign to learn new techniques and whatever I can about graphics/layering/images, etc. I would like to make my film/photo projects more unique and interesting.
I use both a PC and a Mac computer and I have a printer/scanner. I recently took Photoshop, Lightroom and Fireworks. So definitely looking forward to learning InDesign and seeing all of your designs.
I am taking this class to learn more graphic design skills for use at my current job. I work in the department of engineering at UAF and I have recently been assigned to the annual report layout. There are only a few people in the department that have these skills currently. Adding these skills will be a great asset for me professionally and to the department. I am fortunate to have scanners, printers, & a PC available at work for use.
I am the marketing coordinator for Interior-Aleutians Campus. We serve Interior Alaska and part of the Aleutians Pribilof. Most of the communities we serve are accessible only by airplane, snow machine or boat. We are considered a Native American serving institution, which means more than 51 percent of our students are Alaska Native or Native American.I am responsible for all marketing and public relations efforts. I am taking this class to improve my skills in graphic design.
Hi everyone, my name is Debby Queen and I amvery excited to be here in the class. I was born and raised in Fairbanks, and let briefly to attend college in Montana where I studied philosophy. I have three great kiddos; Morrow, Oscar, and Owen (16, 8, and 5, respectively) and a wonderful husband. I work here at the university in the Office of Information Technology as an executive assistant.
I use inDesign occasionally at work, along with the other Adobe applications to help create marketing and communications materials and this is becoming a much bigger part of my job. Additionally, I have spend the last 2 months creating the printed and web materials for my best friend’s (and soon to be sister-in-law’s) wedding. I really enjoy designing and hope to do more in the future, both in my current job and potentially independently. I am excited to improve my skills and learn techniques to create better products.
I look forward to getting to know you all better through this blog, and getting to see all of our progress and we work through the jobs.
I’m posting from a macbook with my ipad standing by as a backup display. I’m at home, in the room where most of the action occurred when our three children were growing up. Lots of block towers, lego creations, sleepovers, home work projects, etc. happened here. My husband and I met as teachers in Ketchikan but have lived our married life and raised our kids here in Juneau.
I’m tickled to have successfully created my first ever blog post and now look forward to checking back often to learn from all of you! I’ve wanted to try InDesign for a couple of years, can’t wait to be able to begin to use it at work and home.
Oh, and may I share a link with you? Before starting my business card I zipped over to moo.com to look at their designs for inspiration. I wondered if you’d enjoy it too.
Hello, my name is Haley. I grew up in Maine but moved to Salcha when I was 7. I graduated from Eielson in 2003 and moved to Fairbanks for college, but dropped out and moved to North Pole with my new husband. My first two daughters were born by 2007 and in 2008 I decided to go back to school. I have been working on an Associate’s in Applied Accounting for four years (it’s slow-going!) and am taking my absolutely last class for that degree – COMM 141.I also have a third daughter now who is 18 months old, so life is pretty busy right now.
I have been dabbling in graphic design since 2004 and would like to start my own business. I had initially wanted to start an accounting business because in 2008 I wasn’t aware that graphic design was a viable career option. I have since changed my mind and because my husband owns his own business I think now is a good opportunity to open my own. I love my 24″ iMac and I know I’ll never go back to PCs. For graphic design this computer is perfect! I’m excited to get to know InDesign since I have been using Photoshop for ten years. I am also taking the Photoshop class because I initially used Photoshop 7.0 and then Photoshop Elements 9, but recently had the opportunity to purchase CS6 Design & Web Premium. I’m pretty excited about this class!
I know UAF doesn’t have a graphic design degree but I am considering pursuing an interdisciplinary degree in graphic design with a concentration in business, utilizing online classes throughout the UA system and plenty of business classes. We’ll see if they let me do it! Graphic Design and computer stuff are two of my biggest hobbies and I would love to turn them into a degree and a career.
I also like going outside with my husband and daughters (ages 18 months, 4 and 6), going on road trips with them to Anchorage and Valdez, reading, writing fiction (or trying to), and learning new things on the computer. Have a great semester, everyone!
I work as a Natural Resource Planner for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Fairbanks. We produce among other things management plans for National Wildlife Refuges. These plans tend to be awfully long and not exactly bedtime reading, so we are trying to create summaries that are concise and visually appealing. I have already worked a bit on such summaries in InDesign but I have noticed during this first task that there is yet much to be learned!
Most of my spare time goes to my four-legged best friend, a 10 yr old chocolate labmix named Ronya. Other hobbies include reading and the outdoors but I never seem to be able to do as much of if as I would like. This summer just flew by!
Attached you will see my attempt to make a business card. I found it a bit of fun until I couldn’t get the words to italicize on the back half of the card. Still, I am a bit proud of my first go.
I was born and raised in Ketchikan, though I have come and gone over the years. I have been around long enough to know that I am content and happy in Southeast Alaska. I do not mind the rain one little bit. 🙂
I live with my boyfriend of two years with our two dogs and two cats. Our house can get a bit chaotic but it is full of laughter and love and to me, that is worth more than any sum of money. I look forward to getting to know you and see what creative minds can create with the right tools!
